The Declarative Articles

The Declarative Articles

In the days after The Cataclysm, our world was faced with the annihilation not just of society but of our very existence. As we fought and struggled to survive, we thought not of borders and trade, but of preserving life. Arnathians did not fight for a piece of land or a banner. Instead, we fought for our very existence.

Now, centuries later, we find the world repeating errors that are certain to lead us to another catastrophic end. At this time, we must recognize the importance and highest priority of coming together as one civilization. We must declare our intent to become one prosperous civilization, celebrating our diversities and uniting against the challenges ahead.

We, as an aggregate, declare in one voice that we are all of one civilization, Arnathians and that the health, welfare, and prosperity of all is the overarching mandate for all of Arnathia.

We believe that all Arnathians, regardless of heritage, deserve the right to live a healthy life and that those who would shorten the life of another are an enemy of all.

We believe that all Arnathians deserve the chance to earn enough to feed their families and pay for necessities without shame or reprisal.

We believe all Arnathians have the right to find a place in this world that is their own and where they can be accepted as equals.

We believe that all Arnathians should be free to worship as they choose as long as their beliefs do not harm others.

These ideals are fundamental to a prosperous society, and these Declarative Articles express the desires and commitment of the signatories to the furtherance of these goals.

Let us go forth as friends, colleagues, and fellow civilians of Arnathia.

Signed, this first day After The Gathering, in Orsholon City.

Purpose

To bring together the Nine Nations of Arnathia and promote lasting peace and beneficial trade between them. To codify the ideals necessary for this to succeed. And to document the agreement and commitment to these ideals by each nation.

Historical Details

Background

After The Cataclysm, regions were forced to rebuild anew. Before the blast, all of Arnathia was united as a single civilization. Emerging from the The 30-Year Winter, these regions had no seat of power, now formal organizations, no ways of contacting other regions. They would be starting over.

As centuries passed and the regional populations grew, each region began claiming territory as its own. At first, the scarcity of people was not a problem in this expansion. Villages were small and far between. But as time passed, villages became cities, outposts became villages, and territory was claimed. Eventually, disputes about the rule and ownership of territory became more and more common, even leading to wars.

After centuries marred by occasional unrest and battle, one Kingdom made the bold move of proposing a treaty – an agreed-upon set of ideals from which a framework for peace and trade could be established for all countries.

History

The Declarative Articles were the dream of King Senden Torgaro of Orsholon. His country, though undoubtedly the most affluent on Arnathia, was also a prime target for attack precisely for their wealth. They had already been through a 100-year war with Baduhm soon after the 30-Year Winter ended. He had no desire to let his country ever fall under attack again. But the only way he could see this happening was if there was an agreement between the Nine Nations of Arnathia to hold each other accountable and work together to resolve any conflict.

Senden began a draft of the Declarative Articles in 4 BTG, and began circulating it to other countries via messenger. Although met with skepticism by a few of the other world leaders, He would press on, asking for their input, and revising the document. He would then send it out again.

After two years, Senden finally had an outline of a document that all could agree to. But his health was beginning to fail.

With this signature, I complete the work of my father, Senden, and usher in a new era of peace and harmony among the peoples of Arnathia. May all the gods favor this declaration.

— King Gawas II, at the signing of The Declarative Articles

His son, King Gawas II took the reins. His mission was to ensure his father's dream would be realized. Senden would dictate to Gawas new sections of the Declarative Articles, and they would debate individual sections to ensure the wording fit their intent.

Senden died peacefully just days before the Articles were signed. The funeral was attended by all the representatives of the Nine Nations, and all spoke eloquently of the effort and dream of Senden's work.

The Declarative Articles were signed, and a new age on Arnathia dawned, the age After The Gathering.

Public Reaction

Reaction around the world was primarily elation. Part of Senden's plan was to allow each country to claim some responsibility for the adoption of the Articles. There were some naysayers, but they were few and far between and within a few years, most concerns had been addressed and quieted.

Legacy

Since the Declarative Articles were signed, there has been very little conflict on Arnathia. Small disagreements are settled peacefully and stopped before they explode into world-shaking incidents.
